Repair Permission under OS X 10.11.x El Capitan

Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan removed Repair Permission command from its Disk Utility by implementing System Integrity Protection feature. However, there is no guarantee this new feature will prevent from permission bits screw ups by 3rd party vendors.

You can still repair permission from Terminal.app

  1. Use Spotlight to find Terminal.app
  2. type following line into Terminal.app
    sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs

  3. Hit [Enter]
  4. Be patient until you see the prompt (your machine name followed by ~$ sign). It may take a while depending on your Hard Drive size/speed.
  5. If error is shown, run it again (⇧The up arrow will recall the previous command so you don't need to retype)
  6. If same error is shown, copy one of the error lines and google it. The chances are it is non important or known issue.
